By now you’ve seen the infamous (and extraordinarily well done) clip of Tina Fey nailing a brilliant impersonation of Sarah Palin on SNL on Saturday Night. But what got overshadowed was Michael Phelps HORRIFIC performance on SNL. I’m not saying it was terrible, but the sketches he was in are making Vin Diesel look robbed for not taking home an Oscar.
Most appalling was how they basically stuck Phelps in the locker room for the same damn sketch Peyton Manning was in. Something tells me that little weasel of a head writer, Seth Myers, was behind that. I gotta wait months for a new SNL and I essentially get a rerun sketch.
Phelps had a short monologue and read of the cue cards worse than Christopher Walken. Lets just this fish, was out of water! (That would be my snobby, NYT-esque one liner!)
But on a good note there was a bizarre SNL Digital Short featuring Adam Sandler lite: Andy Samberg. Here it is. Pretty good. Video Below…
This post is dedicated to Mrs. Garcia for complaining that I don’t write enough!
Am I the only one thinking that these episodes keeping getting worse? The digital short (below) was decent, but the rest of the episode barely cracked a smile for me. Penelope is an ok bit, but I’d rather see Wiig do Target Lady lady again. I’m sorry, but I’ve never found the whole Tim Calhoun thing funny either. It also didn’t help that Amy Adams wasn’t really a strong host either.
I don’t wanna sound like an SNL hater because I do try to give the show a chance, but I’m just not diggin’ it too much lately.
To end on a positive, here is the digital short, which, I couldn’t explain why it’s funny, it just is!
Saturday Night Live aired its second post strike episode and this one, hosted by the lackluster Ellen Page, was downright terrible. The political cold opening was predictable and the rest of the show was an utter mess. I fault the fact that SNL is now seen as the most important political satire show. Its almost an unfair position that the media puts them in. It seems like the writers probably feel a burden to produce a political sketch that is spot on funny, while not offending any of the candidates. For instance, how do they not mention that Hillary is awfully close to having a Femme Mullet? This new stature and focus most certainly affects the quality of the rest of the sketches. Therefore we don’t see as much originality or hip/smart humor like you find on 30 Rock. For me the Digital Shorts, which feature Adam Sandler Andy Samberg are really what keep viewers coming back. They are usually bizarre and ridiculous, but more often than not they work.
Case in point is this Digital Short “The Mirror” from last night.
I’ll admit it’s completely stupid, but you can’t help but laugh. Kind of like watching somebody with arthritis trying to open a pickle jar. I think that the digital shorts play to the younger audience that appreciates retro humor, instead of trying to appeal to a much broader audience. Basically, the digital shorts appeal to Arrested Development fans, while the rest of the show is geared towards people that appreciate Bonnie Hunt’s comedy. I know that the sketches tend to be cultural fads, but overall they work really well. SNL needs to concentrate more on fresh and current humor, rather than appealing to the masses.
