11AugThe Deuce is Back: Here’s What You Missed!

OK, so TVDeuce has been down for a few weeks (thank you very much spammers, who link to viruses!) and I’m sure all of you are wondering:

Clint what’s been going on?

Well to tell you the truth, I haven’t watched a lot of TV lately.  I know that Mad Men and Rescue Me are back, but to be honest I haven’t been motivated to get back in and watch them.  Now I know what you’re thinking:
“Oh God, Has He Started Reading?”
Oh goodness no.  Actually, I shouldn’t say that I’ve given up TV.  To be honest I’ve just limited myself to a TON of Family Guy, Simpsons, and Flight of The Conchords Reruns.  It’s not exciting or newsworthy, but I’ve felt like I’ve needed to reacquaint myself with some old friends.  But I know your curious about my life the past few weeks so here’s an exciting recap of the past few weeks:

*I went to a town fair.  Now I’m not going to name the town, but this fair had TONS of white trash roaming around.  All the usual hallmarks were there: guys in wife beaters, girls with air brushed shirts, people who think the bigger the tattoo, the classier it is, Corona shirts, and my all time fav, THE FANNY PACK.  I’m not saying that the Fanny Pack isn’t practical.  In fact the multi-zippered ones could be a chain smoking photographer’s best friend.  But when a lady with more kids than teeth is wearing it and digging through her singles to see if she’s got enough to get a characterature of herself riding a buckin’ bull is your spokeswoman, then maybe its not such a good style to go with.  Also they had a guy selling dream catchers.  Which made me think of my all-time favorite Demetri Martin joke “Dream catchers work, if your dream is to be gay.”

*I went to a birthday party for a 40 something and all their friends.  Yeah, that was fun, if you’re idea of fun is watching middle age guys throwing back rolling rock and listening to their wives talk about how they don’t care what anybody says, Dee Snyder is still sexy!  You know you’re out of place when that one guy (his name is Pete) keeps pointing out how calm the night is because the tiki torches aren’t flickering!   And if you’ve never been to one of these functions, be prepared to hear Hotel California being repeated until you start see abortions of Don Henley appearing by those ever so still tiki torch flames.

*I went to the UConn surplus store.  I got some cool clothes but missed out on this sweet bubble wrap role.

*I got a new 3G IPhone.  Yeah, it’s that damn good.

*I’ve decided that if I’m going to borrow anything from rap music, it’s to call my next girl “my boo.”  I’m not really sure if its offensive, but I’m going with it!

*Finally, in TV news.  I was driving home from Hershey last week when I noticed a couple of guys on motorcycles.  But the motorcycles were BMW’s and they all this equipment on them.  So I was like “I wonder if that’s Alton Brown filming Feasting on Asphalt.  So I drove up and checked it out and sure enough he had a camera on his head and it was him.  I waived hello, fell back behind him and shot this pic of him (I SWEAR IT’S HIM) with the aforementioned IPhone.

Well that’s about it for now, I’m just excited the site is back up!  Lots more to come this week.

07JunA Girly Night

First of all, I realize that TVDeuce should be a blog dedicated to TV.  However, there is NOTHING good on right now.  So I’m forced to watch reruns and start up a Netflix account.  So here’s a couple of noteworthy things:

1) Flight Of The Conchords is by far the best written comedy on television, even surpassing 30 Rock and The Office. I’ll admit it’s drier than an AA meeting, but if you get it, it’s absolutely stunningly hilarious.  I admit the first time around I found it to be just ok.  But given a second go through, it’s brilliant.  Maybe I’m a comedy snob, but I just love terrific comedic writing.  If you’re a fan of Frank TV or any comedy that appears on The CW, then steer clear of this intellectual comedic oasis.  This tops Tina Fey and is up there with some of Greg Daniel’s best written Office and Simpsons episodes.  I HIGHLY recommend viewing it if you haven’t.

2) I watched Across The Universe last night.  It’s a movie/musical based on the Beatles songs (my god, what a brilliant and common sense title!)  It was good, but didn’t surpass Moulin Rouge as the best musical movie.  It was really good except for the parts that I feel like I should be eating “bad” mushrooms for.  Also, I was rather ticked that Elanor Rigby didn’t make the song choice cut.  More upsetting, Bono was in it, but I couldn’t get a single member of Oasis in the film??  C’mon!  I dare you to find a better “I Am The Walrus” cover than Liam Gallagher’s.  Gees.  Or at least give me a pseudo Brit like Ewan McGregor or that cool little Brit kid that stars opposite Johnny Depp in there.

3) Finally, I just got done watching “Waitress.” Netflix said I would like it.  I submit I would not.  First of all, I felt rather girly as I was sippin’ some left over Pinot Grigio from some mussels I made, and I get thrown into a full fledged chick flick.  What bothered me about this chick flick was that it glorified cheating on your spouse.  Apparently it’s good when the lady does it, but according to this movie and Lifetime it’s not ok when the guy does it.  Once again, I smell a nasty double standard.  Like the one I impose when I make fun of people that read, and then I do out of character and pick up a book.  Or like when i judge people walking into KMart, but then don’t mind going in their seeking values on wonderfully hip and affordable Joe Boxer wardrobe attire.  Seriously ladies, you can’t have it both ways.  You can’t watch this and Selma and Louise and feel good about yourselves.  Pick a side and stick to it.

So that’s my rant.   I think Mad Men returns soon, so maybe I’ll actually get some TV news in here before long.

Feel free to comment on any of the above or just post something stupid.  The choice is yours.

02JunThe Last Two Weeks In Bullet Form!

  • It was awesome that LOST came back with a great season finale.  As a whole the show has rebounded nicely, and is actually giving us viewers the info we desire, while giving more questions.  Ben is by far my favorite character.  He’s got the whole creepy Kevin Spacey vibe going on.  I still hate Matthew Fox though.  Anybody with that kind of “Holier Than Thou” attitude needs to be put in their place.  And that list includes Alan Thicke and Lorenzo Lamas.
  • Mad Men comes back on real soon, which is good news if you love great television.  But if you’re one of those people that hates high quality television, don’t fret E! and The CW will still be there producing mind numbing summer shows.
  • I’ve gone back and rewatched Flight of the Conchords.  In a word: BRILLIANT.  To bad NBC couldn’t snag it, as it would be a perfect Scrubs replacement.
  • HBO’s RECOUNT movie was better than I expected.  If I were compare it to a vegetable, it would be as good as cabbage, but absolutely not in the upper tier like carrots and celery.
  • ROCKET SCIENCE is one of the best movies I’ve watched this year, and I’ve even rewatched Crocodile Dundee a few times, so that tells ya’ something.  If you like Juno, or movies that don’t star Will Ferrell, then this might be for you.
  • Gentleman, you should check out Darjeeling Limited.  Good flick, but very dry.
  • Did I mention how good clicking my ads makes you feel.
  • I hate shameless self promotions.
  • Summer Television makes me depressed.  Not “listening to Radiohead” depressed, but more like “I reached into a tube of Pringles and there was nothing” depressed.
  • Finally, sorry for the lack of updates, nothing really inspired me to write, but I did play an inning and a half of wiffle ball.  I  hit a triple and struck out two.  Damn fine performance, if I do say so myself!

SO DOES ANYONE HAVE ANYTHING GOOD THAT I SHOULD BE WATCHING?
